learning abroad scholarship

The Nordic Collaborative offers annual scholarships to support prospective learners from the Chippewa Valley who wish to pursue learning opportunities abroad in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, or Finland. These may include traditional study abroad (either a semester or year) and educational international immersion trips, but also other formal learning experiences with tuition requirements (for example, Nordic language or folk school programs). These experiences may vary from several weeks to a year. Up to four short-term of up to $500, and two long-term scholarships of up to $2000, may be awarded per academic year. Scholarship recipients will receive a membership to the Nordic Collaborative, and will be expected to contribute to the organization as laid out in the requirements below. Applicants must be (or propose to be) part of a degree or credential granting program. Please apply upon acceptance to your program and no fewer than 4 months prior to the start of the program.

Priority deadline: February 1, 2026

Secondary deadline : September 1, 2026 (depending on funding availability)

scholarship requirements

  • Submit your application a minimum of four months before the start of your program.

  • Before You Leave: Complete service activities for the Nordic Collaborative, determined on a case by case basis according to timeline and applicant interest/skill. This may include presenting at or making food for the annual Wahlstrom Folk Workshop, representing the organization at UW-Eau Claire’s CultureFest, writing features for the Nordic Collaborative newsletter, etc. 

  • During Your Time Abroad: Provide a monthly update with images that can be used in the Nordic Collaborative’s social media and newsletters to update membership on what you are learning and experiencing.

  • After You Return: Share what you learned with the Nordic Collaborative membership, preferably through an educational event planned in tandem with the Nordic Collaborative board.
